tow ratings/gross combined weight rating
« on: February 02, 2015, 05:22:42 PM »

who knows the tow rating or gross combined weight rating of 1992 3500HD?  truck has 454/auto.  i know the GVWR is 15k, but if the truck is to be fixed up for towing i would be pulling a trailer worthy of a CDL, so i would be doing weigh stations, and subject to scrutiny by DOT and trooper types, and am curious as to the tow ratings for fear of exceeding them and getting in trouble.  looking at 52' 5th wheel 3 car haulers with 21k gross trailer weight rating.  trailer plus a few real cars or pickups would put me in the 18-20k range.  truck already has 5th wheel hitch installed.

if i can use the 3500hd platform i'm willing to drop 10-15k into the truck to build what i want over the next couple years.

Pat, I had a chance to look up the GM Commercial Truck specs that another member posted here a while back -

With the 7.4 and either of the HD's available gearsets (4.63 or 5.13) the 7.4 was listed at 19,000 lb GCWR - which is 2,000 lb more than the 6.5TD is rated at.

That's from the 1995 brochure, but since that's still TBI I suspect it would be very similar if not the same, for your 1992 model as they're essentially the same truck other than interior.

Hey guys im new. Picking up a 93 gmc 3500hd. Today! 454/auto
I need to stay under the 26k rule. I called dot. Here in florida they told me they only weigh curb weight. That said I am still concerned the GVWR if these trucks have a 19k GVWR and my trailer has a 12k GVWR than im over what some say the law is. This truck has a scissor lift and outriggers on a service bed. I plan to strip it and make a flat bed.
Its hard to believe you are judged on potential weight not actual weight.
Should I look for a lessor GVWR truck and skip this 3500hd?

Thanks
MrC.

The 3500HD is 15K GVWR, not 19K, if that helps your figures.
