1999 HD 4x4 swap... What to do about ABS
« on: December 13, 2015, 06:07:48 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking for any info about what Monroe did with the ABS after swapping in a DANA 70. The Dana I bought to install in my 99 HD is from a 94. I'm in the midst of the swap at the moment. All is going pretty smooth and this seems to be the only problem. I'll have some great pics of the swap when I'm done.

No idea how they did it, but its simple enough. First off, you need to know how many teeth are on the tone ring on the back of the original hub. Wfoconcepts.com has a 55 tooth tone ring for 99-up solid axle conversions. There are a few different variations for different applications, but no matter what it will require removing the hubs for some light machine work. Aside from that, its a matter of making a sensor tab and getting your spacing right.

Cool. That's some good info. I totally forgot that this truck had abs. Also, I might be wrong about this but when my old Ibeam axle was next to the Dana 70 I noticed that the calipers were very similar if not exactly the same. I thought that was kind of neat.

Doubt they (monroe) did anything about it.
I bought a 94 conversion for parts & after seeing the crap they cobbled together to convert it (4x4), I would be embarrassed to drive it.
Looks like they gave a monkey an axle, a welder a big pile of mismatched scrap & said have at it.

Can't say for sure on an HD but I've done away with it (deleted the abs pump) on 3-4 1/2 & 3/4 ton ifs trucks.
I prefer a firmer pedal & to know what my truck is gonna do when I stab the brake pedal.

I'll take a non abs truck over an abs equipped truck any day of the week.
Delete it & enjoy the truck.

Please post plenty of pics.

This is why I haven't pulled the trigger on the green service body in Ohio, when I saw the pictures posted by fabman it was a big turn off.

I'd say ditch the ABS, too.  I'm not impressed with the 4WAL on the later GMT400 trucks.  When I had my '96 C3500 extended cab dually wrecker, I needed a little bit of a panic stop in the rain at a busy intersection.  Of course the front end is a little light because I had the weight of a wrecker unit in the back, with a car on the hook.  I hit the brakes, ABS activated due to front wheels sliding, and the truck happily surfed right through the intersection with no brakes at all.  I pulled the maxi-fuse for it immediately afterwards and never had that problem again.

so how do you keep the service lights on the dash from coming on when you pull the fuses? I get commercial inspections done on my HD and the definitely won't allow any service lights or CEL's

It will only illuminate the ABS light.  If they don't care (or notice) that it doesn't come on when you do the key-turn bulb test, my solution is to simply remove the bulb from the cluster.

You can buy tone rings and sensor mounts.

Yeah, I've been researching the tone rings. I've found some that might work. They aren't very expensive
