Duramax swap
« on: February 03, 2016, 09:06:19 PM »
Hello everyone.
I wanted to pose the question about swapping a duramax into a 95 HD. After doing a forum search on here, I was not able to come up with anyone who has done this swap and talked about it.
At the end of last year, my crew wrecked my 06 duramax pickup in a side collision. The engine and drivetrain came out ok, but the truck was totaled, and I bought it back from insurance.
Tucked in the back of my shop is my beloved 95 HD dump truck, which has been sitting idle with a blown 6.5 TD.
I would like to join these two trucks in mechanical matrimony, but I'm not sure what kind of work I'm getting into, and how possible it is to successfully pull it off. Does anyone have any info on doing a project like this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Bill

This interests me too.  I'm researching re-power options for my 3500HD and I'm considering a used Duramax.  I look forward to more on this if anyone weighs in.  I've found a lot of valuable information in regard to the 6.5TD & Duramax engines on The Diesel Page, maybe look here ? http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=27620

Good luck !

They're out there. A member here owns one that comes up on google for duramax swap, and I think the guy that owns the popular red step side 1500 wrote and or published a how-to manual.

There was a guy on Diesel Place that had a hot-shot truck and was using a 3500HD that was a 6.5. When the engine failed he did a Duramax and kept the 4L80E, the Duramax wasn't long lived either, but it has been done.

If I find the thread I'll post it.

I think chevydiesel and I are thinking of the same guy, but I saw him over on www/thetruckstop.us. IIRC it was a red 99 C3500HD.

He had a Duramax out of a cargo van, and kept the 4l80E transmission. I would love to see if a 6 speed double OD out of a 4500/5500 could have worked, as I assume the 45/5500 had a propshaft mounted parking brake like our HDs.

For some reason the Duramax had many durability issues in that swap, I think the condition of the junkyard motor was suspect, I think your LBZ would be awesome.

Hey guys, havent been on in a while. Work has been real busy. We are getting ready to start the swap soon. It looks like the motor/trans will run a custom stand-alone harness, and the factory wiring for the chassis will stay as much as we can. I would like to also try and get the column/guages in as well to retain the tap shift that came on the 07. My fab guy that is going to build the mounts seems to think getting the engine in should be no big deal, and I have a buddy who has a duramax swapped 72 chevy that I am hoping to get advice from along the way. We will see I guess.

talk to leroydiesel.com the tap shifter will fit any 95+ interior to my understanding. he has done that part of it when he installed a standalone controller for the 4L80E when he went mechanical pump on one of his 6.5Ls.
