DRL and low beam is gone.
« on: March 24, 2016, 01:58:06 PM »

DRL and low beam will not work on my 99 C3500 HD. Have checked the fuses and they are ok. High beam works.
Have anybody had the same problem?

When you say "DRL" does that mean directional? Also we need to know what type of headlight you have. Easy way of identifying is one type is a glass headlight and the other type is plastic. The glass sealed beam headlights are a common type found in these trucks and it is a frequent accurance that the filament breaks in these. You'll need to replace the whole glass unit which is held in by the trim ring. Plastic headlight, also could be bad bulb, remove the four screws holding the plastic unit in and remove the suspected bad bulb for inspection. Let us know what ya find

Have the "silverado" headligts with new bulbs (HB4). DRL = Daytime running lights when the ignition is on. Same bulb as low beam but there is a diode that lowers the volt to the bulbs. Will check the light switch tomorrow.

My 94 project cab has (2) relays up front...haven't traced them yet..but assume they are for the headlights. (I do remember they had the same color wires as the head lamp connectors...so check the relays).

Looks like the 1999 had the relay/fuse/breaker box up front...try switching relays if they are the same 4 -pin units.

Someone had put in extra relays to the headlights. Had to take the left battery out to find them. Put in a new relay and got light again.

That's a mod to get battery power directly to the lights and take the load off the somewhat-marginal headlight switch circuit.  It works well, as long as it's done well and good quality parts are used.

Glad you got it figured out. :)
That sounds like the 4 high beam mod to get all of four of your lights on when in high beam instead of only the two closest to the radiator. Helps with night driving in areas with lots of wildlife. The kits for doing that same thing are pretty cheap, but they work well, especially on the 88-89 sealed beam setups where they stay clear and separately adjusted to your liking.

I'm looking at putting those lights into my GMC extended hd with the 4hi mod so I can set my high beams to point up just enough to light up the next hill to spot deer/elk/moose/bear/goats/sheep/cattle so I don't end up with one in my lap. I run the big rigs I drive set up that way and it works very well at keeping me from getting fur/blood on the bambi thumper as often as I did with less effective lighting arrangements. After hundreds of thousands of night driving miles, I'm not a fan of the poly lens setups that fade and limit adjustment at all.

Looks like that tractor has plenty of steel up front! ;)

The 94 K2500 cab I bought and installed on my 3500HD chassis has the double relay setup. Still haven't connected any of the lights ...all of the light related wiring is loose (will be connected in a week or so).

Now I have got the low beam working again. Changed the lo beam bulbs to Osram night brakers and put in 55 w xenon in the hi beam.

Yeah Ed, that aluminum guard is very effective, but pricey.

Those lights are looking very good now Jon!
