Interesting - Vandura 3500HD on rear air suspension
« on: September 03, 2016, 11:37:04 AM »
This is at an impound lot I tow to.  It's a Vandura 3500HD, which shares some chassis stuff with the 3500HD trucks.  Straight front axle, 19.5" wheels with the 5/10x7.25" lug pattern, Dana 80 rear, etc.

However I did notice some pretty distinct differences.  Front is up high thanks to 10...10!  leafs in front spring packs.  Just eyeballing them quickly they look like regular truck 2" width; I recall 3500HD rear spring packs are 3" can't remember the front but I think they're also 3?

Rear?  That sucker is on bags, big ones.  Was kind of obvious since it's taildragging so badly from sitting up and the bags going flat.

Was hard to get pics of the arrangement as the van is really low in the rear thanks to the empty bags.  The front bars bolt right into the spring mount and look like they -might- be factory made?  The only GM sales info I have for commercial trucks is 1995 and it does show the cutaway vans, and even with the 14K chassis option it says leaf spring rear.  I'd have to guess this is a custom job to support the weight of that box and cargo??

Anyway; thought y'all might want to see it just as a curiosity.

Ya know, this van is sitting over at an impound lot I use.  It hasn't been picked up in forever (abandoned in storage) which is surprising considering it's a company vehicle and appears to be some very expensive equipment on it for satellite communications.

One of the guys in the office thought it was a flood victim, but I'd still think it had salvage value unless it had been 100% submerged, and I didn't notice any readily apparent signs of flood damage.  So I looked up the company which is out of California and it appears they've gone out of business.  I'm starting to think this wasn't a flood deal at all, but perhaps it got towed in after being abandoned somewhere when the company went dark!

Dunno why I even care except I think it's kinda cool; not exactly a 3500HD (truck) but a 3500HD nonetheless.  Weird how they have the tilt nose like a heavier truck.  I think they were only available as 5.7's and 6.5td's though; and I do believe this one is the diesel.

I saw a 2001 or 2002 3500HD bus with that frontend and a 8.1 liter.

Yeah it's not a slap-it-together setup; the bars actually appear to be welded front/rear to the axle housing.  If it wasn't dragging so low on the ground from the bags being totally deflated, I could get better pics.  Could just be a hunch, but something tells me the van is a little heavy. :D

If it's not a flood victim or wasn't flooded badly, sure would make a hell of a parts truck!

Wow; that one's just plain wacky.  Van cab ramp truck.  Ya know what?  For a 1994 with the 7.4 and what looks like a damn usable bed, not too high of mileage at 142K.. $5999 actually seems like a fairly reasonable price on that thing.  If ya needed one.
