So did they ever have a factory Allison in the HDs?
« on: December 22, 2016, 02:23:51 AM »
Just as the title says, I am curious if the HDs ever got an Allison from the factory.

If so, does anyone have any pics or proof?

thanks!

The mentions of it that I hear are from the 8.1 trucks and possibly only for 2002.  If you have a regular compnine account or a lookup to use up, you could run the VIN on this truck: http://www.someotherplace.com/forum/2002_81.jpg as that's a 2002 8.1/auto, and see what story the RPO codes tell.

one of the easiest ways to find out is go to Napa or a GM parts Dept and ask them to look up a transmission filter for an 02 HD with an 8.1. They'll give you what ever trans options were available to choose from.

HD's vans and suburbans with 8.1s had a mild version tuning wise and a 4l80. Same with the duramax powered vans.

I think if you want an 8.1 and an Allison combo donor including PCM just get an early 2000's-up U-Haul box truck.  Pretty sure that's what was in the one I rented a while back; for the big U-Haul that thing was a beast!  Had that Allison "sound" to it, too; didn't climb under to look but it didn't sound like any 4L80E I ever had and since it's an actual medium duty truck (Topkick/Kodiak type) I wouldn't expect anything other than an Allison.
