Question about 1995 Chevy 30 HD tilt nose van chassis
« on: January 12, 2017, 11:53:39 PM »
Are the rolling chassis similar between the van nosed Chevy 30HD & GMC 3500HD's with the regular cab 3500HD's?  Do they have the same thickness frame rails?

I've spotted a 1995 Chevy 30 HD box bodied van with the tilt nose and body filler panel.  It has the 19.5 rims, 5 lugs on the front and 10lugs on the rear.  But, I've got to go back with a bush axe to clear the finger thick briars from around it to get a look underneath.  I don't even know if it has a spring rear suspension at this point.  Might get lucky and it have an air ride suspension.  I wish.

It might make for a unique little rig, or it might be just for parts, but it's worth looking at.  I know that the small block engine in it is bad.  But the box body on the back will make for some good dry storage, no matter what I find underneath it.

I will share what I find out about it.

Sure would like to hear more about it and some pictures :o

I can't help with the frame question but suspect that someone will jump in.

Just took my 135.5 3500HD cab/chassis project out for a run around the property today to clean up the calipers/rotors (winter rust).

Wasn't able to get by there today to do a more thorough inspection.  Planning on tomorrow.  Already have the camera and notepad laid out.

I don't think the frame is the same at all.  It no doubt has some similarities.  The Vandura 3500HD I posted pics of in the other thread definitely has some 3500HD-similar items; the Dana 80 appears to be the same unit, dunno if the front axle is the same but it -looks- the same, though the front springs look like 2" wide and a huge stack of them - one of you guys with an HD in front of you would have to verify but I thought HD truck had 3" front leafs just like the rear.

3500HD front springs are 2 1/2" wide. Just checked. So maybe HD van springs are 2" or 2 1/2"???

Got by today, cut some briars and got some pics.  Closed the deal on it and a 1996 3500HD cab & chassis, which I will post on.  Didn't even begin to think to take a tape measure with me.  But, it WILL be coming home with me in the next couple of weeks.  The owner has to empty the box out and move some vehicles out from around it.

The frame under the 30HD does indeed appear to be different.  With just a quick look the rails appear to be practically straight from the front axle back.  BUT, it does have an I-beam front axle with the 5 studs showing through the 10 bolt 19.2 wheel and the rear axle is 10 bolt with a nice sized spring pack on it.  The GVW is 14,600 if my memory isn't failing me, according to the decal.  I will get some more details and specs on it once it's home.
