Ignition switch smoke when powering dump bed?
« on: April 27, 2017, 12:27:36 PM »
RE: 1994 K1500 cab on my 3500HD chassis, SBC, NV4500, TPI engine

Made a single cylinder dump bed with electric hydraulic pump...just noticed yesterday that as I raise the bed with truck running or not a slight amount of smoke escapes the column near the ignition switch.  If I let the bed raise intermittently...no smoke.

The battery I am using is only 670 amp and the hydraulic pump power feed comes off the starter solenoid.  Have any ideas why the smoke specifically in the steering column?

Eventually I'll run a second lift pump dedicated battery with a diode in the charging lead.  Maybe move the power feed from the starter to the battery? The only ground on the pump is from the mounting brackets to the frame.

Think I fixed it..ran another ground cable from the frame to the engine..seems OK.  I suspect the smoke came from the horn button ground inside the column.
