Well guys,
I sold the service bed yesterday.
So not only did I have the ugliest 3500HD, I may now have the cheapest.
Paid $1800 for it and drove it home.
scraped the lift for $240
Sold the service bed for $1500
I have $60 in it.  ::)
Add back in the flat bed, water pump, brakes, hitch, brake controller ect.
I am all in this beauty for $1300.

That's great  I'm in the same situation over the years of buying 3500HD trucks for parts I put the best parts (cab, tires, wheels, chassis etc) to the side and finally put them all together last year.  The truck was free - my only cost was a new gas tank and the metal to build the flatbed. Good job!

No real update other than information.

I scaled twice yesterday at to different scales empty, averaging between them both
with a ten foot flat bed (no goose neck) she scales at 7,400lbs.

I am quite surprised, I was hoping to be under 7,000 pounds. It's all good I can still stay under my 26,000lbs. limit.
without really trying so my break down as follows
Truck 7400
Trailer 2500
Tractor 8500
gross weight no granite is 18,400
that gives me a good window of 7600lbs.

Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to give an update on my ol' girl.
This past fall I replaced the entire ignition system from a new distributor/cap/button/coil/plugs and wires, this fixed a poor running, hesitating stumble I was having.
I also replaced the entire fuel system from a high pressure vortec fuel pump, filter and rebuilt and cleaned the TBI.
I also reset the timing to 4 degrees instead of the 6 i had set it at.
I also flushed the trans and changed the tranny filter.

I carry everything but the kitchen sink when I go off, I never know what I might need.
Here's a pic from this last weekend. She ran flawless, but maintained 5 mpg there and back. I figure tractor, trailer, extra forks and tools I am pulling 12,500.

Only issues now is like before lack of power, I can cruise at 65-75 mph @2500 on the flats no problem but the hills would knock me down to 50-55. It became a game I would race down the hills reaching 75 even 80 just to loose it all at the top of the next topping it at 55mph. I ran in overdrive most of the time it only downshifted a few times, there was a section of hills I put it in drive until we were past them, then back to overdrive.

mines a 454 gas 4l80E with 4.63 gears. I am thinking a better cam for towing or better heads any thoughts?

Try the RV cam if you will, heads will need an intake to accompany it. Headers an exhaust should follow. With the amount of money that will cost I still wouldn’t get overly excited. Tbi and even gen 1 vortecs aren’t towing monsters especially with the 4l80e behind them.

She’s for making money not for saving money and as long as you keep up on the maintenance it’ll do just that.  The chassis is built for the job but Pushing one of those to tow heavy you’d be better to start with a nice trans cooler and some gauges. Keeping an eye on towing temps will keep you outta the garage. I never let my trans stay above 200*.
