WTB: 92-02 C3500HD Click for requirements.
« on: November 15, 2010, 01:47:38 AM »
WTB: C3500HD

I would like it to have it equipped as follows:
1992-2002.
Reg. Cab
6.5L
5spd
2wd
183.5 inch Wheelbase
Reg cab
white in color (or silver, pewter, or any other good clean color. would prefer to avoid red)
would prefer 4.63 gearset, but both are too low, so a gear swap is in its future.

all of the above are required to be factory, no swap jobs, re-paints (from oem paint code white re-painted to white is ok, yes i am that OCD! :) ), or frame stretches for this guy. It may have been done well, but i have seen too many that havent. that is why i wont consider it if it has been modified.

require it to be rust free, NM and AZ cracked dashes are cheaper to fix than body work so they are just fine! :)

also would highly consider a crew cab C3500HD that can take a 11 ft flatbed, all other requirements the same.

will take any junk bed, as long as bare truck is good, will take blown engines, shot powertrain components, as long as the truck is good.

I am mainly after the factory super long wheelbase and a gloss white cab and 6.5L 5spd! I have a project I want to try out (legal cross country hauling under 26K GVWR) and am after the above specs.

thank you!

I think diesels typically came with the 4.63's anyway, and gas trucks with 5.13's.  I have found that swapping a gas engine into an ex-diesel, the 4.63's are just a tiny bit shy for good takeoff in 2nd gear, causing me to use low very often.  I figure they gave the diesels 4.63's as to not over-rev them on the highway, and gave gas 5.13's since they can rev higher and could use a tiny bit more oomph to get off the line.

Shouldn't be too hard to find what you need since you're open to almost the entire year range of the 3500HD's, and since you're open to buying a 6.5 with a bad engine. :D :D :D (sorry; couldn't resist)

Although I noticed you stated 1992-2002; to get the 6.5 you need to change that to 1993-2002.

No sir, dad does own a VIN verified (Build date 4-24-1992) 92 C3500HD with the 6.5L, and have seen other (very few, but still a few) non HD 1992 rigs that were 6.5L equipped.

basically the new for 92 stuff was the NV4500 and the 6.5L turbo diesel, amongst other things. (the different dash cluster wiring, etc)

You are partially correct though, as when you run the VIN on the above rig on Comp Nine, it says (GK9) 4.63 on one line, and on the next line it says (GQ1) standard axle ratio. so basically it is standard 4.63, but 5.13 is optional, as that is what was ordered on my 95. I do wish the 95 was 4.63 equipped like the 92., as I dont care about the launch, it is just the lower final drive ratio that matters to me.
as far as driving, the way I am accustomed to driving the nv4500 behind a diesel is to let out in first at idle, get rolling, grab second, then give it some fuel and row through them from there, but I always seem to just idle in 1st, seems easy on the components to me. cant be too easy on the 6.5L! :D
I love them to death, but I can understand why some folks dont care for them.
Richard, I do honestly believe with your attention to detail and desire to do it right or dont do it at all, and can-do spirit, I think you would be a great 6.5L owner, basically one that is willing to keep up on the higher maintenance needs of the 6.5L, and would be willing, able, and interested in modifying a 6.5L to perform well.

but back on the rig.... :D

I am surprised one hasn't popped up yet, as the only rarity IMHO is the wheelbase. then the next rarity is the condition I would like the body to be in.

I am still looking folks!

I guess I've intentionally not become a 6.5 expert of any kind because I so dislike them. :D  Your comment about "can't be too easy on the 6.5" is kind of key there; I expect that when I need the power, I can mash the pedal and not worry about if the squirrels under the hood are going to have a coronary or not! :D  To me, with GM, the only way you get that is with a big block.

I am surprised to hear they were in any 92 models, though.  I thought 93 was first year for 6.5TD (and only year for mechanical injection.)

Look here, buy my HD w/ 8.1L gas 4L80E-hd -- 183.5" long wheel base.  Engine lopes along 2,000 rpm at 60mph.  8.1L very cool and strong and doesn't slowdown or heat up going up hills (like the 6.5TD), sometimes never even kicks out of OD up grades.  This truck exceeds your requirement options like Cruise control, GMC SL package, A/C, Split Rear Window and Cloth Seats.  Take it from 15years driving hot-shots all over the state, had three 6.5 turds and not worth the trouble (fuel mileage is no better either while diesel cost more), and wouldn't buy a stick when auto trans lasts 500,000 miles, never mind the jamming gears -- buy a vette if you want that!  Bitchen 19.5 Alcoas too (can't buy this style anymore).  If you saw and drove this truck, you'd buy it.

granted its not an HD, but I got 18.5 mpgs out of my 8500lb C3500 6.5L 5spd 2wd 11 foot service body chassis cab running empty, and 9.5-11 loaded to 20K combination, so I still feel that is big block beating milage.
Sometime, I'm gonna jack with rear axle ratios and see if I can do better.

Sorry to say, I doubt an auto, even the mighty 4L80E will make 500K miles. plus I am broke, so no vette for me, so I got to mix play and work, so I row my own gears! :)
(plus, the ol 6.5L definitely doesnt need a tranny cooler in the cooling stack. ol girl needs all the cool air she can get! and the lack of power, dont need a torque converter eating up power )

I will buy the wheels though! :D

still looking for the truck described earlier.

I have a 1995 GMC 3500HD turbo diesel 5spd manual 5:13 gears - white 4 door - grey interior - captain chairs - fiberglass low bed - PROS ; everything you want , normal surface rust (not on body) , all the glass is good , no seats are torn , radio , electronics all work. CONS; headliner is starting to bubble, the driver side back window stopped working , A/C compressor leaks but will hold and blow cold air , the paint has faded . The gritty a month ago I had a knock in the engine , I'm currently pulling it to have the bottom end rebuilt , I keep things as factory as possible . The truck has about 125000 original miles on it. Its not been stored in a fall out shelter , but its really nice for 20years old. Let me know if your interested . I drove it daily till the knock. I'm not desperate to sell but I will ,its always nice to have a truck around. Give me a email and ill send pictures.
