GMC Tavern/ Pick up
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:10:20 PM »
Here is a picture of what was an ex military tavern. I have been converting it back to a more original 3500HD 4x4 pick up.
I will post pics of the full build soon.

I LOVE it! I've built a truck just like it with a Cummins.

Looks awesome and keep up the good work!

Also, what's the width of the rear end from the outside of the tires? Mine is 84" and doesn't look near as wide as yours.  ???

Not sure how wide it is, I think the rear axle is a dana 80. I will find out the width.
I am in the middle of fitting 5" bushwhacker fender flares to the rear, I think you did the same.
I now need to get some front flares but I am missing the infill pieces that go from the lower grille to the fenders.

Looking good Barn, you're definately beating me to have the first rebuilt Tavern on the road. Keep it up!

Out of interest, have you kept the wheelbase the same to fit the standard 8 foot bed, or have you had to shoten it? I'm still thinking of what to do for a bed on mine.

Hi again.

I have moved the rear axle back to its original position, around 17" back and have extended the chassis to suit. The only problem in doing this is that I have had to get a new propshaft made, but its well worth it. I have also altered the arches on the bed to allow the bushwhacker fender flares to fit.

I have got the bed off again and have been working on some exhaust stacks. I intended to buy some but you cannot get them over here so as usual I have had to build my own this is how they look.
I have removed the soot trap ( not sure if I should have done that ?) so the system is straight through now.

How's progress on this? Did you get your flares sorted out?

Still trying to sort out front flares. I would like a pair of the original factory fitted ones.
My truck is now fully repainted in mercedes white, and its on the road.
I need to paint the wheels and work on the interior, I am also having a major problem trying to get hold of a tie rod ball joint.
I will post some more pics.

If you can get me a close-up picture of the rod end you need, and a measurement or two, I could help you out on finding a replacement, or at least some numbers. Being a Dana axle I couldn't imagine they used an oddball TRE. For example, GM Dana 60's used the same TRE from the late 1960's to the early '90's, and is the largest factory offered TRE. And the Dodge 60's I have use the same TRE on my '79 and '93 axles.

If you want, feel free to PM me and we can go from there.

Truck looks awesome! I love seeing these trucks done up as a pick-up, and you've done a great job!

As for TRE's, I have a good feeling these are what you have, but measure to be certian.

                     Thread/Diameter      Thread length     Overall Legth
ES2064L         1.00x18tpi               2.735"               4.75"
ES2011R         1.00x18tpi               2.00"                4.12"

These Part Numbers should interchange through the different brands.
