hey guys,

I really like the vbulletin software to run a forum, and was wondering how much would have to be ponyed up to make it happen? is it not cost effective to do so? I love the content of this site, but I like the v-bulletin layout, and was just curious.

GM Guy

I looked into it, it's about $200 and has an annual fee (approx $80) for support and updates. Hands down a great product used by many great forums.

As you probably know you can go to the bottom of any forum to see what software they are using. I'm using the free SMF (Simple Machines Forum) software, this layout is one of many they have. If you go into the admin section you can change this theme by opening the "Themes and Layout" section and selecting another layout.

I  host several forums for free..just a hobby. FYI: I pay Godaddy approx $60 a year (out of my pocket) for hosting. This allows me to host up to -25- web sites, I have about 8 right now.

You'll see a lot of advertising on the vBulletin based sites to pay for the vBulletin updates etc. I don't have any paid advertising because I figure for $60 a year, I get unlimited free advertising  and can make my political statements without getting banned!! I don't smoke or drink, so $60 is cheaper than a carton of cigarettes.

You could check out one of the free forum software providers:

http://www.simplemachines.org/

http://www.phpbb.com/

They have MANY themes and layouts similar vBulletin. Try one… if you want to buy vBulletion later down the line, vBulletin can import your user accounts etc.

Also: If you want to try a some forum software - send me a PM, I have a practice site where you can try the different software online.

I was thinking about installing “Google AdSense” on this forum,  those little ads that you see on other forums, each time someone clicks on one, you get paid a few cents.  I have it on one forum,  not much money and Goggle only pays out when you reach a $100 total…been over a year now and still haven’t reached $100! BTW: You can’t click you own ads or even hint folks to click on them, if you do..your AdSense account is revoked.

SMF works fine for this forum (www.3500HD.com), it was never intended to be a large forum because it is specific to one model truck, the 3500HD.  When looking for 3500HD parts I learned that many so called “truck people” didn’t even know what the 3500HD was! Hopefully this site is helping to get the word out.

didnt know v-bulletin wants that much, and I take it that is for one site, or can you run a couple off of one paid account?
