HISTORY OF GM 3500HD BY YEAR?
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:02:14 PM »
To Ed and all other members

I was thinking back  when we we bought our 91 3500hd, I remember looking up info on the real 3500HD and I gathered more info off of this forum than anywhere else on the net. I was wondering what do u guys think about a section on 3500HD.com called " history of the gm 3500HD by year" or something along the lines of that . A section where we could list the years of the real hd 1991-2003(each year being a topic in that section ), and members could post info, specs, tech tips, mods, cool custom things, etc anything and everything about there truck under that year! That way when people are looking at the fourm, and say they have a 94 HD they could click on 1994 and see what people are talking about or have posted about there year truck. Just a idea, if y'all don't like it or think it will be a pain in the a** don't be afraid to. shoot it down. Just try to help the forum, I really appreciate this forum and everyone here y'all been a HUGE help! Thanks

Don't forget there's a wikipedia entry with some useful info, though it's not always accurate.  I've tried making a few simple changes/additions to it and some of the info "stuck" and some didn't.

I'd be willing to contribute what I know to this idea of yours, I'm no expert, and official records on stuff like this are kind of slim as I don't think too many people have an enthusiast-type view on vehicles that were aimed at just being work trucks.

Yea I would say you know a lot more about the 3500hd than I do ol buddy! But I'm learning :-\. I read the Wikipedia page that has the hd info, but if you read the post in this forum there's a hole lot more to go on. What I was thinking was for members to put there own trucks history, like well start with 91 and we'll post what we know about each year ( drivetrain, body, etc.) Then as member read the post they could add things about there trucks. Like say I never joined this forum and y'all already had the history section and under 91 y'all had 454tbi, 4l80e, Dana 80, etc. I would have gone under 91 and posted that I have a rockwell international rear in my truck and so on. That way the history its not just one guy writing the whole thing, its all kinds of 3500HD owners posting little things about there trucks. Stock and custom. Just something to think about. You never know, that might push non member HD owners that read this forum to join because they have something diffrent and want to add there input to the section.

Here's a seriously quickie slap-together of info, everyone feel free to add to it, debunk it, correct it, etc.  Not much but it's a start:

1991 introductory year; some optioned with Rockwell International rear axle instead of Dana 80. allegedly 5.7 engine available but I have never, ever seen one with a VIN indicating 5.7 as original (8th digit = K) - so many blown diesels have been swapped for gas, surely plenty of people have seen a 3500HD with a 5.7, but not thought to verify via the VIN.  As far as I know all the 1991's were likely TBI 7.4's

1992 6.5 turbo diesel added to available engines

1993

1994 grille & filler update, Topkick/Kodiak exterior door handles adopted, 6.5TD changed to electronic injection, diesel models include bumper with cooling holes, added brake light relay on firewall seen on lighter models with CHMSL although HD has no CHMSL

1995 changed to new style interior, new style underhood harness same as lighter models, added 4 wheel ABS

1996 changed to OBD-II engine controls, Vortec 7.4 replaces TBI 7.4, NV4500 5 speed changed to integrated slave/release bearing style, alleged introduction of factory-available crew cab body

1997 dash style changed to type that would have passenger airbag in lighter models but 3500HD gets open storage compartment instead as these trucks do not have airbags

1998 added Passlock anti-theft system same as lighter models, some production in Flint MI, prior to this all were produced in Janesville WI

1999 all production appears to have moved to Flint MI

2000

2001 all production moved to Mexico, 8.1 engine replaces 7.4

2002 final year of GMT455 3500HD production

I've seen a couple advertised as 2003 models and one I swear I recall checking the VIN and it was correct (10th digit = 3) but since I've not been able to find any, although occasionally I do see one incorrectly advertised.  In fact just today I saw a so-called 2003 3500HD on truckpaper.com today that the 10th digit of the VIN is clearly a 2, making it a 2002 model.  I got tired of hunting that unicorn so I finally removed the references to a 2003 model from my VIN card.

1991 GM produced a 15000gvw cab chassis truck called the 3500HD, offered in 2wd only, solid I -beam front axle, 19.5" wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes. 135.5", 159.5"and 183.5" wheel base. Two mirror styles, camper/west coast
1991-rockwell international model c103, 456 ratio , 12" ring gear rear(ill post serial number soon).
Dana 80, 85.8" wide, full floating axles, 11" ring gear rear offerd in 463 or 513 ratio.
1993-first year for 4l80e transmisson.
1994-183.5 wheel base , gm addressed the frames weakest point by adding frame reinforcement plates.
Please correct me if I'm wrong!

This is cool. Now all we need is people to post some more info on the year truck they have, and after some more post, if Ed wants to and has some time he can make this a section, make every year a topic in that section, have at the top a intro about the 3500HD. Then we can gather up all the post about the years and add them to the topics.

ATT; MEMBERS IF YOU POST SOMETHING "IFFY" ABOUT YOUR TRUCK, MAKE SURE TO INCULDE YOUR VIN# WITH YOUR POST, SO WE CAN LOOK IT UP AND SEE IF ITS STOCK OR CUSTOM(ie 5.7 350, full floating 14bolt rear, 135.5 or 159.5 wheel base truck with frame reinforcement plates, etc)

FYI: Making another category (or child board) is easy. I'm also sure that I can make anyone interested a Moderator (ie not Global Moderator) for that one specific category only, with permission to alter the topic verbiage etc. Could be a couple of folks...something to think about anyway.

Explain to me what all a moderator does on this forum( remember I'm new to forums, this is the only one I've ever posted on. I don't have a facebook or what not. Before I joined this forum I just used the internet as a research tool). sense I brought the idea up( had a lot of help from someotherguy, getting it started)  I would definitely be interested in becoming a moderator. It seems someotherguy and myself are both taking a intrest in this history section idea and sense he has already started laying out the plans for the years ill become the moderator.

In a nutshell..a Global Moderator can approve and ban members, delete and move topics, rename topics, create new categories.  Kinda like the forum police, jury and judge.

A Moderator as discussed would have very limited permissions. For example we could make a member the Moderator for the "3500HD Trucks For Sale" category, he/she could delete, correct postings (spelling/grammar) within that category only.

The Global Moderators can also monitor the Moderators, but not vice versa.

No big deal..once I understand what is needed, I can also make the changes at your request.

Not like signing up for the Marines, no physical pain here!

On 1993 being first year for 4L80E I might disagree; the transmission was introduced in general in 1991 including in the 3500 cab & chassis, I would expect that the 3500HD offered it as well but I have no proof.

Don't let lighter truck specs throw you - 1993 was first year for the 4L60E, which is the light duty electronic overdrive automatic used in 1500's and 2500LD's, replacing the 700R4/4L60.  The 4L80E hit the scene in 1991 replacing the TH400.

Oh ok. Cool thanks for correcting me.  This is good as people post in this topic, they can be  debated and corrected untill we gather enough info to list the years with soild history, then branch it all off to its own child board.

OK, some facts from the SAE paper on the development of the 3500HD.  This is from a presentation made at the "Truck and Bus Meeting and Exposition" in Detroit, in late 1990.  So keep that in mind- these will be details that apply to the very first 3500HD's and of course things evolved over the model's lifespan.

* The 4L80E was in fact offered from the beginning, in the 1991 model 3500HD.  This was was also the first transmission available in the 3500HD as the NV4500 5 speed manual had not hit the scene just yet, though was slated to be available.  The 4L80E used in the 3500HD is unique to the model in two ways - not just the parking brake setup but also with spiral-cut gears for improved strength.

* While the 5.7 engine was slated to be the base engine, it was undergoing internal improvements for use with the 3500HD so it was not immediately available - production began with the uplevel 7.4 engine.

* Powertrain chart shows the 5.7 engine would only be available with the 5 speed manual and either rear axle ratio, and not available with the 4 speed automatic.

* The Rockwell International 11,000lb 12-1/8" rear axle was the one initially used in the 3500HD in its 1991 introduction, with available ratios of 4.56:1 and 5.13:1.

* The I-beam 5,000lb FGAWR front axle is based on the one used in the P model stripped chassis in production since 1985.

* Front and rear disc brakes identical to those used on the P model stripped chassis; 14.25" front rotors and 13.75" rear rotors, necessitating the use of the 19.5" wheels.  The 225/70/19.5 low profile tires were chosen to maintain the low ingress/egress height requirement of design.  The original tires were provided by Goodyear and were load range F.

* Driveshaft mounted parking brake of 9"x3" is same unit used in GM's medium duty school bus chassis, modified for activation with pickup-style parking brake pedal mechanism.

* Power steering pump output pressure was increased by 6% to help assist when the vehicle is at load.  Power steering gear is 14:1 packaged in same housing as a light duty pickup.

Great stuff, I need to know how you guys want this info incorporated into the history section.

After reading the above..wondering if the "3500HD 5.7" has unique characteristics vs a standard truck 5.7? I know the standard truck SBC engines while cast and drilled for roller cams/lifters/hold downs were fitted with flat tappet cams. I have two right now that I'm installing rollers inside.

Would also think the 3500HD 5.7 had a specific cam grind and all 4 bolt mains.
