I bought a set of G622 225/70R19.5's from Wing-Foot truck center just up the road for $165 a piece, i also bought a  G171 8R19.5 from Pomp's tire for $187/ tire of which i did not used as it was to small in comparison to the 8-19.5 so i never went back for the other 5 of them, I bought 245/70R19.5 DH01's from GCR for $137/tire all of which company's where linked above.

I have bought many many 8-19.5 NOT to be confused with 8R19.5's not the same tires at all . . . NO place above did i list an 8R19.5 at all . . . the 8r's are by fare skinnier and shorter then 8-'s . . .

So your saying you don't use 225-245/70R19.5's ? i listed the dealers where i bought those 2 sizes . . . nothing wrong with mold cure shrink wrap recap's they are DOT approved for steer axle application's even . . . tho i haven't ran them but i will be soon enough . . .

I've used a couple of sets of recaps before, and didn't have any trouble with them. What's your experience with them? Yeah-I've heard all the scare stories on 'em,but the ones I had,one set of LT235/75R-15's and one set of LT235/85R-16's,seemed pretty good, and lasted as long as any tires I ever had. My only complaint is that a few required a little more balance weight than I would have liked.
Those TreadWrights look pretty good to me;how do they do the shipping? That could prove to be a deal breaker for me,out here in the desert.

Mike

For my own curiosity/use ...  What markings indicate that a tire is steer axle approved?

The tire has a DOT #, and the recap also will have a DOT# stamped into it . . . No DOT no steer axle DOT steer axle safe.
Some also label them D/T/S = Drive / Trailer / Steer.

Mold cure & Shrink wrap cure are best a hot cap is ok and cold cap almost never lasts . . .

I know some guys swear by recaps, but in my own opinion, its just not worth the risk.

Maybe you found those new G622 225/70/19.5 for $165 a piece, dunno, online prices I've found so far are $250/ea for the exact same model and size.  http://www.treadepot.com/tire/139172205.html

I had to look up DH01 to see what kind of tire you were talking about since I hadn't heard of it, well it's a Hankook, which is made in Korea.  You can keep 'em.  Many Hankooks are made in China, too.  Check the 4 digit DOT code, first two digits are the country code - look them up here: http://www.harriger.com/tires.htm

And now back to the subject of recaps - do you remember this previous quote?  NOT recaps?  Then you posted recaps.  Since the original point was not using recaps, can we keep it apples and apples, not apples vs. oranges?  I'm not interested in recaps, you can run them if you like but I will not.

there 4 separate 19.5's in the $110-$130 a tire all of which where made in the USA that where not Recap's that preformed flawlessly . . .

I already have some excellent tires, don't need any, but if you're going to post about the great deals on non-retread, non-chinese, $110-$130 a tire 19.5's then everyone should have the info! :D  So far, we don't have it!

Heck you only need 30 lug nuts...that extra $6 should sweeten the deal ;D

You could probably find an entire 3500HD with good tires for that, then part it out and get most of the money back.

Man!  Hankooks at $255/ea!  I'd buy some Michelins or Goodyears instead!

Who in the heck is trying to sell DH01's@$250+ per tire ? . . .  :o

Your getting jacked around, there a $130-$140 tire all day long around here  ;)

Rim's can be had for $50-$250 a wheel depending on how shiny ya wanna go  8)

used steal wheel's $50-75/rim to $100-$150 for whole set  ;)

Mounting balancing tire disposal $7.50 . . .

so worst deal = $840 in DH01 tires, $1,500 shiny alloy wheel's, $45 in labor = $2,385 at the high end - $780 in DH01 tires, $300 in basic steal wheels, $45 in labor = $1,125 . . .

Dude most be buying the same parts you can from the same dealer's you can buy from and jacking the price's up . . .

Yeah,I don't know how they can justify this kinda robbery. I looked at the estimate and told the guy,"Ya know, this estimate is for more than I have invested in all the trucks I've ever owned, including the purchase prices. This ain't gonna happen in THIS lifetime." I've had an account at Les Schwab Tires for years, but I sure as hell ain't gonna use it for this!
I'm kinda liking Ed's idea-find a wrecked 3500HD and part it,and use the wheels and tires on mine. (Or rip the cab-n-doghouse off it,part the interior if it's good, and replace it with a '49 GMC cab and front group. ;D Then I'd have the best of two different generations.
I think for now though,I'll leave this truck pretty much as it is. If my friend comes through with the 10 speed twin stick for my Mack,I might consider taking its 3 speed Brownie and putting it in my one ton. That'd give me,I think, a .82 overdrive,a direct, and I don't remember how low the "Low" is on it,but it's way down there! That would give me two "twin sticks",the Mack's 5 and two,and this truck's 4 and 3. That reminds me-I'd like to find an overdrive 5th gear 5 speed for my '57 GMC 2 ton, to replace the SM420 4 speed it has now. What can you guys think of that would work? I think an NV4500 would do the job if I didn't get stupid with it. So far it looks like first is about as low as the first gear in the 420,and it has a pretty even split between gears,so it'd probably work well with the 2 speed axle, and the overdrive would sure be a good thing, even if I couldn't use it with the truck loaded.(It only has a 270 gas six, though I've given serious thought to finding a wrecked 2 wheel drive Dodge 3/4 or one ton and swapping the GMC over to a 24 valve Cummins and 5 or 6 speed stick. :D)
