Hi everyone.  I'm pretty new to having a truck and I have TONS of questions to ask about it, but I'll just ask a few at a time.  I'm hoping that this post will get lots of assorted feedback so I can learn all this is to know about my truck and I know that there's probably no better place to learn that stuff than right here.  Well, I just got a 1998 Chevy 3500 Crew Cab Dually with a 7.4 Liter 454.  I bought it because I needed something to tow my 26ft, 6000lb  Travel Trailer and my 1995 F-150 just wasn't doing it.  For starters, I'd like to know:  1). What kind of tranny I might have 2). What gears might be there (4.10, etc)  3). And basically, anything else you'd like to teach me or find out about my truck.  If pics and VIN might help, I can provide those, too.  Thanks!

I will check on that right away.  As of now, there's nothing on it that says HD...In fact, it says SILVERADO if that helps.

Transmission will be a 4L80E if it's automatic, NV4500 if 5 speed manual.  Figuring it's a regular 3500 not a 3500HD, the gears are typically 4.10's in the regular 3500.

Great trucks, not without their little issues that can come up, but few show-stoppers.  Should be a world of difference pulling your rig around vs. that F-word 150. Cheesy

That is great! I always wondered what the difference was between those 2 types of transmissions. Now I know. As for the gears, a neighbor told me they might be either 4.10 or 4.56. The title of the owners manual says C/K Full-Size Pickup.

Very common to see 4.10's, not very common to see 4.56's.  Check the SPID label (option code label; SPID stands for "service parts identification") in the glovebox.  Gear ratio codes begin with G; you'll probably see GT5 which is 4.10.  May also see G80 which means it's equipped with the factory locker, the Eaton Gov-Loc.

I had a 2000 3/4 ton version of that same truck with a 5 speed,  it was great towing and if I ran 60mph empty I could get 16-17 mpg, got 10-11mpg towing the travel trailer,  only real problems i ever had were the power steering pressure line,  and input shaft seal in the trans at about 150k miles...  4.10's arnt bad if you keep the speed down once you spin that big block over about 2500rpm they really start to drink fuel..

Lots of great info, guys...Really appreciate it all!!  Also, I checked on that SPID label in the glovebox and did see that I in fact had 4.10 gears.  Cool thing is I found a VIN decoder webpage on another post that told me what all those codes mean; very informative (especially for a newbie like me).  That webpage is http://www.compnine.com/vid.php   Grin
