2001 4WD Conversion
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:56:06 PM »
Hi, I figured I'd start a build thread on my truck. I wanted something a little heavier than a one ton. Enter a 2001 hd with an 8.1. I knew before I bought the truck I was going to do a 4wd conversion. I had a 14 bolt rear out of a cube van, and I had a dana 61 front axle laying around.....The gears starting turning.

I will primarily be using the truck for offroad recovery, and towing a trailer. I want a boom, but don't want to sacrifice my flatbed soooo......I am going to build a 9 ' flatbed with a hidden boom. The boom will fold down flush, and the top of it will essentially be part of the bed floor. I want to bob the corners of the bed similar to a wrecker body.

Good choice  Did you make Bumper ?  What did you use for front saw bar ? Also what did you do for the anti / lock brakes ?

Its actually just a drawing of a bumper right now, but I am going to build one as soon as the truck is mobile again. What anti-lock brakes?..lol. As far as I'm concerned it never had them. ;).

For now I am running 3.73's. They might be a little steep for the 8.1, but they will be perfect when i get a Duramax in there.

It doesn't. It has a 4l80e right now. When I do the swap I plan on using the complete engine/transmission harness from the donor truck. At that point I will have to address the parking brake situation, but i'm pretty sure there are options for a np205. I will most likely run the 8.1 for this year and save the duramax swap for a later date.

It looks like you took out the dana 61 center and replaced it with 14 bolt? That's pretty sweet, what did you wind up doing with the 61 stuff?
94 K3500HD (factory Monroe 4wd upfit) short wheel base 9' bed 454 no more/NV4500HD/NP261HD/D70 frt/D80 rear 5.13's Cummins powered with 3.73's.
93 C3500HD long wheel base parts truck 14' bed 6.5(gone)/NV4500HD/D80 4.63
95 C3500HD medium wheel base 11' bed 6.5/4L80E/D80 4.63
2000 C3500HD Monroe extended cab 9' bed, 6.5/4l80E/D80HD 4.63 will become 4wd with D70 front and repowered some day...

I still have the 61 housing with the gears. I used a different set of c's so I didn't need to cut up the 61 housing. I should be getting back on this soon, with a few changes.
