2001 3500 HD Fast Idle For PTO
« on: April 05, 2014, 12:04:38 PM »

I have a 2001 3500HD rollback with an 8.1 gas motor and automatic transmission. It has the clutch type hydraulic pump mounted under the hood. How do I get it wired to fast idle when I turn the pump on?

Not a high tech solution but extremely inexpensive and easy to do - an idle-up solenoid that is normally used on a carbureted application, originally intended to kick up the idle a little bit when the A/C is on.  Thing is, there's no easy place for you to install this near the throttle crank arm on that 8.1 throttle body!  However...here's how I did one:

Note the pintle on the solenoid (gold bolt head sticking out) is aimed from the firewall towards the gas pedal arm, a little bit below where the cable attaches.  The solenoid isn't strong enough to push the pedal on its own.  I hooked power to the solenoid to the PTO switch.  So when I'd turn on the PTO, the solenoid can't move the pedal, BUT, just a simple tap of the pedal and the solenoid extends and becomes the new "stop" point for the pedal, raising the idle to where I pre-set it by my positioning of the solenoid.  When I turn the PTO off, it retracts, and idle is normal again.

These solenoids go brand new for like $35 or so at the parts house.  Or if there are any boneyards with 80's stuff in them, you could pick it up for next to nothing.

I did this because I was running a '98 3500HD 7.4 with a Vulcan Intruder, and about half the time I'd hit the controls the engine would stall.  This solution worked like a champ.

I found that this truck came factory with the pto/high idle switch. The switch is bad.I got the numbers from it and called GM and it has been discontinued. The GM number is 15720785 and GM told me the number changed to 12497678.Any idea on where to get one.

I ended up finding a new switch and I just tried it today and it still won't work so something is screwed up somewhere else.I think I am going to try that solenoid you showed me.The thing is I will have to make a bracket and it will have to push towards the firewall instead of away the way this electronic pedal is made.Do those solenoids have very much pressure to push because this pedal has some tension to it.

I'm not sure that carb solenoid would have enough oomph to push the pedal by itself without tapping the pedal like Richard suggested. But I would think maybe the idle solenoid from an old 6.2 diesel would work, it pushes on the lever on the side of the injection pump on those engines.

I think I would explore fixing the OEM setup a little more, sounds like it should be pretty slick when working right.
